Here is a selection of the games we've played (some more often than others...)
Blind Line (2 players)
Get suggestion of relationship from audience. Get lines of dialogue on slips of paper, either before show starts or on-stage with players outside the theatre. Players then play a scene, using strips of paper occasionally as dialogue. Players should try to work the lines of dialogue into the scene
SLSR (4 players)
Players stand in a square formation with 2 players (A and B) in front and two players in back. First two players get a suggestion for their scene and then “shift left” is called. Player on front right side shifts to the left, and the rest of the players follow keeping the square formation with then player B and C in the front. Then a new suggestion is gotten for those two players. Repeat until all 4 combinations have a suggestion. Caller can then shift the scenes around, left and right. Each player is in two different scenes with a total of 4 scenes. Time jumps are possible.
Conducted Story (5 players)
Players stand in a line with a “conductor”. The conductor gets a suggestion for a story- title or character/action or object. The players are telling a story together. The conductor points at each player and that player tells the story. When conductor points to another player, that player has to pick up where the last player left off. Can be played as an elimination game.
Sure Ding (2 players)
Caller has a bell. When the bell is rung in the scene the the player has to change the last thing he/she said. (ex. “I love Metallica!”, ding, “I love Led Zeppelin” ding, “I love Wham” sad but true)
Roller Coaster (2 players)
Caller takes suggestions for emotions, genres, countries or musical styles. Players play scene. At any point caller can freeze and name a suggestion and players have to continue scene in suggested style, emotion, country, etc.
Scene Replay (2 players)
Players do a short neutral scene. Caller asks for emotions, styles, genres, etc. and players replay scene in suggested style, emotion, etc.
10 Little Indians (3 or more players)
Players play a short scene. Audience gets to vote one of the players out and scene is replayed without losing any character/actions/dialogue. Play until one player left.
Exits/Entrances (4 players)
Suggestion: Words for players and location. Each player gets a word. When that word is said by another player, if the player is offstage they must find a reason to go on-stage. If the player is on-stage, they must find a reason to go off-stage.
Yoyo (3 players)
2 players are sent out of theatre. Suggestion: A location where a lot of people can meet. The player left onstage sets up a scene with many imaginary characters. The other players are introduced back into the theatre one by one and have to fill in the gaps set up by the first player.
Freeze Tag (4 players or more)
Suggestions: Physical activity. Two players begin a scene. At any point players on the back line can call “freeze” and tap out one of the players and take on the same physical position and begin a new scene based on that position.
Spy Puppets (4 players)
Suggestion: Mission for the puppets. Two players are “puppets” that cannot move their bodies, they can only speak. Two puppet masters move the puppets throughout the scene.
Arms-Through Interview (4 players)
Two players conduct an interview with their hands behind their backs. Other two players are close behind with their arms through, doing the “hands” for the two players having the interview.
Slo-Mo Olympics (4 players)
Audience suggestion: household activity. Two players seated, one is tv host for Olympics show and other is “expert” for Olympic household activity. Two players are competing the sport in slow motion.
Hesitation (2 players)
Audience Suggestion: relationship. Players play scene and at any point look to the audience to fill in blanks in dialogue. Suggestions called out should then be worked into the scene.
Total Improv (3 players)
Audience Suggestion: first letter of names from two different people in audience. With the two letters the players then invent a game with a two-word title beginning with the two letters and a rule how to play the game. Audience then votes on game they want to see and winning game is played on the spot.
Scene Tag (6 players)
3 pairs of players get 3 suggestions for beginning of their scene. First scene is started, at any point other scenes can call freeze and step in and begin playing their scene but the last line from the first scene is the first line of the next scene. Scenes can be tagged in and out, first line is always last line from previous scene.
DVD (2-3 players)
Audience Suggestion: Name of a film never been made before) A caller has the dvd remote and uses features of a dvd to show scenes from movie also special features like different language, forward/reverse, bloopers, etc.
Inner Song (2 players)
Players begin scene. Caller finds dramatic moments and freezes the scene with a suggestion for a song. Each player sings a song and scene ends in a duet.
Piano Torture (2 players)
Players begin scene. When piano player starts playing, players must sing. When piano stops playing, the players return to spoken dialogue.
Time for a Song (2-3 players)
Audience suggestion: 3 titles of unwritten songs. Players play scene. At any point in the scene a caller can freeze the scene and announce “Time for a song” with one of the titles suggested.
Slide show: (4 players or more)
Audience suggestion: vacation destination combined with an unusual activity or hobby. Caller then calls for “slides” formed by the other players in a freeze. Caller then describes his/her vacation based on the positions of players. Caller calls “next slide”, lights out and players form a new picture.
Questions (4 players or more)
Players ask a question to the audience. The answer is the inspiration for the next scene. Players on the back call the end of the scene and step forward to ask a new question and new scene is played based on that answer.
Emo Blind Date (4 players)
Audience Suggestion: 3 emotions or qualities used to describe a character. One player is on a blind date. Other 3 players play one quality each of the same person.
3-Way Dubbing (3 players)
Audience Suggestion: place where 3 people can work. Players dub each other, Player A playing the voice of Player B, Player B playing the voice of Player C and Player C playing the voice of Player A.
Sign Translation (3 players)
Audience Suggestion: Animal and activity that can be done on vacation. Two players conduct an interview with one player expert on “animal that does such activity”. Third player “translates” interview into “sign language”
Superhero (4 or more players)
Audience Suggestion: Something nice, something bad, celebrity and household objects. One player is sent out of room while suggestions are being taken from audience. Player comes back in and has to guess that all the good things have been turned into bad things by the evil celebrity but he/she can save the day because they are superhero household object. Player guesses these things one at a time by clues verbal and visual given by other players.
Cluedo (3-4 players)
2 or 3 players are sent out of the room. Player left on stage gets suggestion of occupation, location and murder weapon. A murder has been committed by the occupation at the location by the murder weapon. Players come back in one by one and try to guess by clues given only in action and gibberish. Reveal of the clues at the end of the game
One-joke games/bell games:
World’s Worst (4 or more players) Audience Suggestion: occupations. Players show world’s worst at that occupation
185 (4 or more players) Audience Suggestion: objects. Set up “ 185 objects walk into the bar. The bartender says “we don’t serve objects” Objects protest, usually in some sort of word-pun
Confessions (4 or more players) Audience Suggestion: something to confess like “I slept with your boyfriend”. Players show the worst possible response to confession
Foreign Movie (4 players)
Audience Suggestion: Name of film not yet made, language for movie to be in. Two players act out the film in gibberish of language and other two players do the subtitles.
